Reading-Thursday

LG: I can read and record information about a topic.

Today we are going to be exploring a South American country called Peru. Here is a map, it’s a pretty small country compared to the rest of South America.

In Peru, there is a very special Wonder of the World called Machu Picchu. Today we are going to learn about this special place.

Maths-Thursday

LG: I can time myself doing everyday tasks.

Last week we spoke about how long a minute was and tried timing ourselves with one minute challenges.

This week  you are going to estimate and time yourself doing some chores around your house.

Remember that when you make an estimation you are making a smart guess about something.

Extension:

Find 3 other chores you can practise your estimation skills on.

Writing-Thursday

LG: I can write an adventure narrative.

Today you are going to write a short adventure narrative. Adventure stories always include:

  • Something exciting and extraordinary, often a quest or a mission
  • Escaping danger, going on a quest or experiencing something out of the ordinary.

You adventure narrative will be about recovering a lost treasure from Machu Picchu. Have a think about what you learnt about Machu Picchu from your reading lesson that you might be able to include in your story.

Things to think about:

  • Who are my characters going to be?
  • My setting is Machu Picchu, from pictures I have seen, how would I describe the setting in my story?
  • What is the problem going to be? Remember you have to include the lost treasure.
  • How is my problem solved?
  • What describing words can I use?
  • Make sure I use paragraphs

Remember, that it is an adventure story, so make sure you include some action! Here are some pictures of Machu Picchu that might help you get some ideas together!

Reading-Wednesday

LG: I can make connections with the texts I read.

Today we are exploring Egypt. Read the PDF below about hieroglyphics. Then make some connections about what you read. Try and make 3 connections-one of each of the connections below.

Text to self:
A connection between the text and your life or experiences.
Text to text:
A connection between the text and another text you have read.
Text to world:
A connection between the text and events in the world.

Extension:

Can you write your name using the hieroglyphics?

Writing-Wednesday

LG: I can create a story using the hieroglyphics.

Have a look at the hieroglyphics above. Then choose 4 hieroglyphic and use them to write a short story.

Look at my example below.

The 4 hieroglyphics I chose
Lion (L), Beach (N), envelope (P), stripy cake (KH)

My Story-

The day had arrived, Larry walked by the beach feeling quite sad for himself. It was his birthday and all his friends had found some excuse when he tried to organise a get together. The more he thought about it, the more he became grumpy.

As he arrived home later that evening, he saw something bright yellow sticking out of his letterbox. Larry pulled the yellow envelope from the narrow opening. He observed it and wondered who it might be from, curious he opened the letter and discovered it was an invitation to his local take away restaurant that evening.

Larry was so curious to find out who the invitation was from that he forgot all about his friends and his birthday and decided to get dressed in his best lion fur and head down to the restaurant.

When he entered the restaurant, he was greeted by the loudest ‘SURPRISE!’. Zebra, snake, parrot, rhino, giraffe and tiger were all standing by a stripy cake . Larry’s friends waited for Larry to join them so they could all sing happy birthday to him.

Larry secretly felt bad as he thought his friends had forgotten all about his birthday. He was so thankful to have such an amazing group of friends that he ran over to blow out his candles with the biggest smile on his face!

Maths-Wednesday

LG: I can create a shopping list and work out the total

OK 3/4s, it’s shopping time! Shopping is a real-life everyday activity we do that can allow us to use a lot of our maths skills and number knowledge.

Today you are going to make a grocery list for shopping at Coles. You only have $50 (imaginary) dollars to spend.

  • Start by writing down a list of some things you would like to buy that you estimate you could maybe get for under $50 in total.
  • Next, click on the link to view the Coles catalogue and see if you can create a list of items that you would buy for under $50. Remember to write down how many of each item you are buying. If you want to, you can use the search bar on the Coles website to search for specific items that you want to buy that aren’t in the catalogue.

For today’s task, you are allowed to use a calculator to add the total.

https://www.coles.com.au/catalogues-and-specials/view-all#view=catalogue2&saleId=33284&areaName=c-vic-met&page=17

You may want to round the amount to the closest dollar to make it easier for you to estimate and add, or if you would prefer, you could use this simpler catalogue example instead:

CHALLENGE:
Double it! Oh no, looks like there was a price change and every item is now double the cost! Work out how much each item on your shopping list would cost if the price is doubled. What would your new total be?

Integrated Studies-Wednesday

Today our science lesson will continue to involve different experiments and investigations.

They will include elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

We call this STEAM.

Today we have two interesting investigations for you. With the first you get to explore the concepts of Freezing and Thawing, and in the second you get to improve helmet/container you design in the last lesson.

Choose one and open up the PDF file to find out more and open up the PDF file to find out more.
