W10: Wednesday STEAM Fun

LG: I can conduct a scientific experiment.

First,

To celebrate Science Week our maths will be integrated through STEAM investigation each day!

Think about the next letter in STEAM – the E is for engineering. Engineers use their knowledge and skills in maths, science and technology to design and build creations to meet all sorts of purposes! Today you will be practising your engineering skills.

Next, choose one of the investigations below:

Bridge Building Bonanza

Build A Bird Feeder

Design a Back Scratcher

Then, if you are interested, and have time, you might like to do one of the other investigations.\

Finally, don’t forget to record any notes, results, images or understandings onto your OneNote.

TUESDAY

Hi everyone,

Today in our small group meetings we are going to be playing some games! Have a think of some of the things you might like to play.

To celebrate Science Week, you can also check you the MPPS Science Week Blog.
We will be holding a virtual Science Night this year, You can check out the blog and find lots of great activities and experiments you can complete with your family!

W10: Tuesday Reading

Learning Goal: I can write a book review

Today you are going to write and publish a book review of your book club book. A book review is a great way help other readers decide if they should read a particular book or not. Here is a website with lots of reviews kids have written.

Book reviews

First, make sure you have finished your book club book.

Next, think about what you want to say about your book. In your book review, these are the questions you are going to answer.

  • What is the title?
  • Who is the author?
  • Include a short summary (without giving anything away)
  • What was your favourite part?
  • Would you recommend this book to a friend. Why?

Now, draw your book up with the questions below and answer them.

Then…
We want you to publish your review! Head to the Olga’s MPPS library blog and click on the link to submit your review!

Extension
You can to turn your questions into paragraphs. It might look like this.

W10: Tuesday Writing

LG:  I can code using Braille.

First,  we are going to look at what Braille is.

People who are blind or have low vision use their fingers to read. This method of touching the letters and feeling the words is called Braille.

The Braille code uses raised dots of three rows and two columns like the picture below.

Each letter is different dots coloured in.

You might have seen the Braille code in your area;

Next, use the Braille code to create a classroom signage that could assist current and future students at MPPS. Make a sign for the following things using Braille. Draw a picture of what you have decided to label and write the word next to your picture using the Braille Alphabet.

  • toilet
  • library
  • office
  • playground

You be able to think of some more signs to make we could put around MPPS. Here is an exmaple

Finally, after you’ve uploaded your writing task for today do 20 minutes of touch typing.

LG: I can conduct a scientific experiment.

First,

To celebrate Science Week our maths will be integrated through STEAM investigation each day!

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. When we work on science investigations we often need other skills such as technology, engineering, art and maths. This week you will be given a range STEAM activities that involve two or more of these groups of skills.
For today’s STEAM activities, we will be focusing on Technology.

Next, choose one of the investigations below:

Build a robot hand

Robot make me a sandwich

You might like to share your experiments on the Class Notebook with your teacher!

MONDAY

Hi everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! We have lots of fun things planned for the last week of term.

This week there will be some changes to the WebEx Meetings.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we will have a small group meeting. You time and group is below.

On Wednesday, there are no small group meetings! We have a whole class meeting at 9:00!

If you have any questions about this please let me know!

See everyone soon 🙂

W10: Monday Reading

Learning Goal: I can play the role of a character when reading a script.

Reader’s Theatre is similar to a play but instead of using body language and acting, you use your voice. It means that each person in the group has a part to play and needs to express their lines as the character in the story would.

First… Take a look at these students performing a reader’s theatre script to their class.

Then… Your teacher will give you your script in your group meeting today. Once you know which script you are reading, download it and practise so you are ready to perform on Thursday.

The Gingerbread Man

Chicken Little

THE REAL STORY OF CINDERELLA

W10: Monday Writing

Learning Goal:  I can code using Morse Code.

First,  we are going to look at what Morse Code is.

For a long time the main way to send a message over long distances was for someone to carry it from one place to another. Then in 1837 Samuel Morse developed the telegraph, this wire allowed someone to send burst of electricity over long distances quickly.

Problem was each burst of electricity simply made the one same sound.

Samuel Morse then realised if you controlled the bursts of electricity you could communicate. So using short bursts (dots) and long bursts (dashes) you could spell out the words for your message. While this might seem to take long time this meant written messages that had taken days or even weeks to deliver were now sent in minutes!

This is what Morse’s code looks like.

Next, decipher the message below. A smiley face is a dot while a heart is a dash and the / means a new letter.

Then, come up with you own message to send to your teacher. Be creative, for example you could use different coloured Lego blocks (see example below), beads or simply draw dots and dashes.

Finally, after you’ve uploaded your writing task for today do 20 minutes of touch typing.
