Foundation-Week9

Learning goal: I can draw an animal using lots of different types of line.

Materials:

  • Piece of paper, coloured or white is fine. Or your arts book.
  • Black marker, black texta or black pencil.
  • Grey lead pencil.
  • Animal photo (if you can).

Your task:

Is to create your own animal drawing where the focus is on LINE. Your animal could be of your family pet, or a pet you would dream of having (tiny pig or monkey!?) Or it could be of an Australian animal.

First, look at this artwork which is part of the collection at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

  • It’s of a storyteller’s cloth or Chireh as it’s known in Afghanistan.
  • It was made by Haji Abdullah Wakil Zadhah and his sons.
  • The family lived in a city called Hera’t where they have been illustrating cloths for a long time.
  • On the cloths we usually see wild animals of Afghanistan.
  • This one, shows a smiling cheetah with partridges surrounding it.

So what do you notice about the lines in this artwork?

Take a good look at some of the zoomed in sections of the image.

What words could we use to describe the lines in each section?

Next, choose your animal.

  1. Draw the bold outline of the animals head using a thick black marker. Try to make this really big and take up a lot of the space of the paper. We don’t want small drawings that are difficult to see.
  2. Draw the eyes, mouth and nose. Try to give your animal some personality. Give it a cheeky smile or big grin!

Then, using a thinner marker if you have one. Draw a variety of lines. Draw some wavy, straight, zig zag, curved lines. Think about the direction you are drawing the lines. Can you alternate this?

This is Christine’s example…
