Press play to hear Christine read out the instructions for this lesson.

We’re taking a break from the Visual Arts and returning to the Performing Arts this term!

This week’s lesson is all about Drama, specifically Monologues. Read ahead to find out more…

Learning goal:  I can perform a monologue

Key words: Monologue: one long line that one actor in a movie or a play performs.

Materials:

  • A quiet space to perform where you won’t disturb anybody.

Your task:

You’re going to learn a bit about monologues and have a go at performing a monologue!

First, look at the video showing an example of a monologue.

This one is called Helping Grandma.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjdvYYqNY-E

Ask yourselves the following questions:

  • What was good about their performance?
  • What could they improve about their acting?
  • What emotions was the actor showing throughout the performance?

Next, read the following information…

A good monologue should give the actor a chance to show different emotions. We want the actor to share many different emotions even in a short monologue. The actor should experience all emotions throughout the monologue. Not just happy, or sad or angry.

This is an example of a monologue where the actor goes through an emotional journey. It’s a comedy monologue by Sadie Bard.

Then, read through these two monologues. Notice the emotions in brackets. These will tell you what emotion you need to express.

Script Monologue 1: NEW BABY TROUBLES-

(sad) I can’t believe it! My parents are having a baby…again! I already have two younger sisters and now I’m gonna get stuck with another one!

(grumpy) I don’t care what anyone says: Babies aren’t cute!

(angry) All they do is mess up your room, break your toys and wake you up early in the morning!

Script Monologue 2: TOOTH FAIRY RIP OFF –

(grumpy) I feel ripped off! Yesterday my tooth fell out, so I put it under my pillow for the tooth fairy.

(excited) I already knew what I was going to buy: A big, dripping chocolate icecream! YUM!

(angry) But guess what I found under my pillow this morning? 10 crummy cents! What am I gonna buy with that?!

Finally,

After you have had a go at each of the monologues. Perform it to a family member or your toy audience!

Well done, Amazing Artist! I’d love you to send me a very short video of one your performances.
