Learning Goal: I can draw a dragon eye.

What is a dragon!?

Dragons have been mysterious creatures that have been included in stories and movies around the world! They are said to have wings and breathe fire. In the world of film and books, sometimes dragons have been portrayed as the villain while others have been shown to be friendly supportive pets that help the hero in the story. Dragons have also been portrayed in different cultures.

What do know about dragons? Do you like dragons? Can you think of where you have seen dragons before?

Your task: You are going to draw your own dragon eye. Focusing on the colours and shapes of the eye. It’s a real close up on just the eye and the scales around the eye.

What can you tell about someone just by looking into their eyes? What could we find out about a dragon just by looking into their eyes?

Materials:

  • Black marker.
  • Grey lead pencil.
  • Coloured pencils or paints.

First, draw an almond like shape in the middle of your paper. Use your grey lead pencil for this. Keep it really big. (I am using a sharpie so that you can see it easily in the photo).

Next, draw the middle of your eye. Add details and scales. You can choose to do many different shapes for this. Look at my example. I chose to do a half moon shape and I filled it in using my sharpie.

I added these curved lines to surround the eye. Humans have these too! The skin folding beneath and above the eye.

Then, add the scales surrounding the eye. Fill up the whole page with different sizes and shapes of scales. You can use your imagination to create scales of your choice. Just fil up the space. We’re then going to focus on adding texture around the dragon’s eye. Remember texture is the way something looks like it might feel. Like bumpy or smooth. Imagine running your fingers around these scales. What would it feel like to touch?

Finally, add colour to your eye. Think about the colour choices you are going to make. You can choose only cool colours (blue, green or purple) or warm colours (red, orange, yellow) or any other colour of your choice!

I used water colour paints for my dragon’s eye and I love the way it turned out only using cool colours (blue, purple, green) for the scales and warm colours (yellow and orange) for the eye.

Now you’re done!

Well done, Amazing Artist! I’d love you to send me a photo to my email address:
