Year 3&4-Week 2- Activity

The Colourful village artwork- lesson inspired by Art teacher- Cassie Stephens

Learning goal: I can draw a colourful village in the style of Karla Gerard.

Karla Gerard is a contemporary, abstract artist from Maine in the USA. She loves to make art, which includes little cute houses. They are fun, colorful and use lots of simple lines and shapes.

Some definitions of important words:

Contemporary artist– an artist who is still alive and working today.

Abstract art – doesn’t look completely realistic like a photograph, but you can still recognize what it is.

Materials: Remember you can use any materials available to you- this is just a guide!

  • Piece of paper (any size).
  • Pens, oil pastels, markers, colour pencils.
  • Black marker or black pencil.

Step 1: Using your black marker, begin to draw a small house in the middle of your paper.

Step 2: Slowly fill up the page with different types of houses. Add dots, lines, and shapes to make your houses interesting. You can copy some of the ones you see in the photo.

Step 4: Once you have fill up your entire page, go in and colour your houses in with lots of different bright colours.

I’d love you to send me an email with your artwork! Christine.caminiti@education.vic.gov.au
