Monday 19/07 – Writing

Over the next two days, we will be experimenting with poetry writing!

Today we will be looking at acrostic poems where the first letter of each line spells out the poem’s theme going down the page.  The first letter of each line is capitalised, which makes it easier to see.

Goal: I can write an acrostic poem

First, watch this video and listen carefully to the key features of an acrostic poem.

How to Write Acrostic Poems

Next, write your name vertically (going down the page)

Then, using what you have learnt from the video write one line per letter

Finally, decorate your poem with images related to your name

Remember, lines don’t have to be the same length or rhyme!

Friday 16/07/21 – Writing

Goal: I can tell a story from a different perspective.

First, choose one of the characters below:

Next, think of a reason why your character is going to go to the park.

Then, write a short story about your character’s walk to the park.

Remember to include what the character is thinking about and what they are saying to themselves in your story.

Finally, edit your work for spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Thursday 10/06 – Writing

Today you will do your writing lesson with your teacher in your small group Webex lesson!

If you are waiting for your group time, you can go on with some of your other tasks for today, and don’t forget about personal writing! You might want to work on a story, persuasive text, poem, informative text or any kids of writing that you like.

Wednesday 09/06 – Writing

Goal: I can write a creative procedural text.

Today your task will be to create a procedural text, or set of instructions, that are a little unusual.

First, think about the features of a procedural text or set of instructions.

They usually tell you:

  • What you will learn to do
  • The materials or things you need
  • The steps to completing the task

In the example from today’s reading lesson, the writer also started with an introduction that tried to convince you why you would want to do that task.

Next, choose a task or activity to write your instructions for. You might choose a really boring or unpleasant task, and then write about it in a way that makes it sound like it’s exciting or fun!

Here are some options (or you can come up with your own):

  • How to unload the dishwasher
  • How to clean up after your dog/cat/pet/sibling
  • How to tidy your bedroom
  • How to make your bed
  • How to clean the sink
  • How to take out the bins
  • How to fold a fitted sheet

Then, write a set of instruction for why you would do it, the things you need, and what the steps are to completing the task. There is an example of how you might lay it out here: How to… example

Finally, if you are up for a challenge – make a video of yourself or someone in your house (if you can convince them) doing you oh so boring task, but convincing us that it is really fun!

(I know I would love for someone to make me a video about how to fold a fitted sheet)

Monday 07/06 – Writing

Goal: I can write from a different point of view.

Listen to the audio below to have the lesson explained to you.

First, choose your favourite animal or go to the national geographic website https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals and read about an animal of your choice.

Next, take some notes on the diet, the habitat and the lifestyle of the animal of your choice.

Then, imagine you were that animal, write about what you did during the day.

Things you might want to include:

  • Where do you live?
  • What did you eat for lunch?
  • Who do you live with?
  • How you are feeling?

Try and be as descriptive as you can.

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can use my senses to describe a setting

Today, you are going to write two descriptive paragraphs, describing what the picture looks like from two different parts of the story Uno’s Garden.

First, describe the city that the people are living in after all the natural plants and creatures have gone:

Next, describe this setting from the end of the story:

Finally, check your work, edit and revise

Remember, to tune into all of your senses and imagine what it would be like in each of these places – what would you see, hear, smell, taste and how would you feel?

Writing – Wednesday 02/06/21

Goal: I can write an adventure narrative.

Today, you are going to write a short adventure narrative about recovering a lost treasure

Adventure stories always include:

  • Something exciting and extraordinary, often a quest or a mission or escaping danger

First, plan your narrative, paying attention to ‘Things to remember’

Next, draft a short narrative about recovering a treasure

Finally, edit, revise and illustrate your work

Things to remember:

  • Who are my characters?
  • How would I describe the setting in my story?
  • How will I start my story – make it sizzle!
  • What is the problem going to be? Remember you have to include a lost treasure.
  • How is my problem solved?
  • How will it end?
  • What will my character learn?

Writing – Tuesday 01/06/21

Goal: I can write a persuasive letter.

In class we have been producing persuasive texts. Today you will write a persuasive letter to a leprechaun who has the power to grant you three wishes.

First, think about if you had three wishes, what would you wish for and record them.

Next, write a letter to a leprechaun explaining why you think he/she should grant you each of your wishes.

Finally, edit and revise  your work!

Remember, don’t forget the following;

  • Start your letter by introducing yourself
  • Use a new paragraph to explain each wish and why you think it is a good wish.
  • Finish your letter with a simple conclusion.

Writing – Monday 31/05/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can plan and draft a short story.

In class we have been looking at the writing process. We’ve created seeds, then planned, drafted and edited a short story.

Today plan and draft a short story.

First, plan your story. Don’t forget to include a list of characters and settings. Also jot down some notes on the beginningbuild-upproblemresolution/conclusion.

Next, write your draft. Remember to make your writing interesting and think about your word choice. You may also want to think about other strategies you may know such as a sizzling start or show not tell.

You may want to use your own idea for your story or one of the following word prompts or pictures:

  • Look what I found in my Grandparent’s secret cupboard.
  • It was the strangest experience I ever had.
  • The secret world at the bottom of the garden.
