Mindfulness – Friday 04/06/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can practice mindfulness.

FirstMindful Breathing:
Tune into your body by laying on the floor and slowly breathing. Try feeling for your heartbeat. Can you find it? Is it going fast or slow? If it’s going fast, try and focus on taking mindful breaths and see if you can slow it down. Find someone else in your house and show them how to lay down and take some mindful breaths with them, then try and feel for their heartbeat. Is it the same as yours? Encourage them to take some mindful breaths with you.

NextMindful Drawing:
Draw a scribble using just one line and then colour it in using different colours.

Finally, if you are looking for some follow up mindfulness activities, check out the following pages on the MPPS mindfulness blog:

Time for Thankful Thursday

Hi 3/4s, your teachers had a meeting yesterday and we all shared how well everyone was going. We are so grateful to have such enthusiastic and engaged students with such supportive families. After yesterday’s mindfulness lesson we’d like to know what you are grateful for. Please share during your small group meetings.

Also remember if anyone has any pictures, drawings, models, stories or working outs you want to share please remember you can email them to your teachers.

Today:

  • All students are to join their small group Webex meeting. If you can’t join the group at that time, please let your teacher know!
  • Click here to check the time for your Webex groups for this week.
  • 12:00pm – 1:00pm – Your teacher’s Webex room will be open if you want to pop in to ask a question or have a chat!

Scroll down below for today’s lessons. Today you also have another STEAM lesson and an ARTS lesson. Again, once you’ve finished your lessons you may want to check out:

Finally, even though it looks like rain today or tomorrow, don’t forget to get out and move around. Nothing’s better than jumping in puddles.

Reading – Thursday 03/06/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can visualise as I read.

First, read or listen to “Quite please Owen McPhee” below,  or click on this microsoft stream link.

Next, in your exercise book you are going to draw a picture of what Owen’s friends, teachers and family might be feeling when he can’t stop talking. You may want to listen to the story again and record some words from the text that helped you visualise what they were feeling.

Finally, use your JRB and see if you can do any visualising as you read today.

Writing – Thursday 03/06/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can use my senses to describe a setting

Today, you are going to write two descriptive paragraphs, describing what the picture looks like from two different parts of the story Uno’s Garden.

First, describe the city that the people are living in after all the natural plants and creatures have gone:

Next, describe this setting from the end of the story:

Finally, check your work, edit and revise

Remember, to tune into all of your senses and imagine what it would be like in each of these places – what would you see, hear, smell, taste and how would you feel?

Maths – Thursday 03/06/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can estimate how 1 minute is.

  • How long is 1 minute?
  • Most of you will be able to say that 1 minute is 60 seconds. But can you describe how long 1 minute is in a different way?

It is useful to be able to get a feel for roughly how long one minute is, so today you are going to use a timer to complete some 1 minute challenges! You might have a 1 minute egg timer at home, or use a timer on a watch, phone, iPad or computer. Here is an online timer you could use: https://www.online-stopwatch.com/eggtimer-countdown/full-screen/

First, draw up the table below in your book:

Next, estimate how many of each activity you think you will be able to complete in 1 minute and write it in the table.

Finally, set a timer for 1 minute and do each activity – record the results in the table.

As a challenge you may want to  estimate and test each activity for 5 minutes as well. Is there a way to predict accurately?

Write down anything you noticed about the difference between repeating activities for 1 minute and for 5 minutes.

STEAM – Thursday 03/06/21

(press play to hear today’s lesson explained to you)

Goal: I can design a tool or device that could be used to protect our oceans from pollution caused by rubbish and litter.

Your design could be used to stop the rubbish getting into the ocean, or it could be used to remove the rubbish from underwater environments.

First, watch these short videos about some inventions being used to try to help this problem:

Next, using a bucket of water and some household tools, experiment with the types of tools that could help to stop rubbish entering the water or that could be useful for removing different types of rubbish from the water.

Set up your experiment model by filling a bucket or large container with water, and adding small pieces of rubbish and litter (include different materials such as paper, plastic, leaves, food scraps, liquids, etc.)

Use the following household tools (or similar) to see which most effective:

  • Tongs
  • Cutlery such forks, chopsticks, etc.
  • Strainer or sieve
  • Different types of spoons or scoops (slotted spoon, ladles)
  • Tweezers
  • Netting, mesh or fabric that could be used to strain liquid through
  • Any other things that you think could work!

Draw up a table to list each tool and write down how effective it was:

Tool Picture

(draw)

Effectiveness
Tongs Could only pick up large items
Strainer
Tweezers
Slotted spoon
Chopsticks

Then, think about these different types of tools and draw up your design for your own ocean saving tool or device! Label its parts, how it works and what it would be made out of.

Finally, make sure that any equipment that you used for the experiment gets washed thoroughly before putting it away (no putting dirty kitchen utensils back in the kitchen draw – YUK!).

Welcome to Wednesday!

Hi 3/4s, it was great to catch up with everyone in their small groups. We really enjoy seeing your smiling faces and hearing your joyful voices. Plus, so many great pets. Many also shared their stories created from the prompts, very imaginative and entertaining.

If anyone has any pictures of their drawings, models, stories or working outs please remember you can email them to your teachers.

Today:

  • All students are to join their small group Webex meeting. If you can’t join the group at that time, please let your teacher know!
  • Click here to check the time for your Webex groups for this week.

Finally, don’t forget to get out and move around, even if it is just bouncing a ball on your head.

Reading – Wednesday 02/06/21

Goal: I can identify similarities and differences

First, read “Avocado Asks, What Am I?”

https://web.microsoftstream.com/video/f52095e3-4948-4526-a991-417fd3657bf5

Next, use a Venn diagram to list the similarities and differences between an avocado and a fruit of your choice.

Finally, use your JRB to read and recording your thinking.

You may want to try making guacamole with an adult at home by downloading the recipe here: guacamole recipe

Writing – Wednesday 02/06/21

Goal: I can write an adventure narrative.

Today, you are going to write a short adventure narrative about recovering a lost treasure

Adventure stories always include:

  • Something exciting and extraordinary, often a quest or a mission or escaping danger

First, plan your narrative, paying attention to ‘Things to remember’

Next, draft a short narrative about recovering a treasure

Finally, edit, revise and illustrate your work

Things to remember:

  • Who are my characters?
  • How would I describe the setting in my story?
  • How will I start my story – make it sizzle!
  • What is the problem going to be? Remember you have to include a lost treasure.
  • How is my problem solved?
  • How will it end?
  • What will my character learn?
